Tucked into a bend of the Thames southwest of London, Hampton Wick sits between Kingston upon Thames, Teddington and the stately grandeur of Hampton Court Palace. It’s the sort of well-heeled riverside neighbourhood that visitors often breeze past en route to greener, grander attractions – namely Bushy Park and Richmond Park, both vast enough to swallow a weekend whole.

Add a meandering stretch of the River Thames, handsome period houses and a postcode popular with media types, and it’s easy to overlook Hampton Wick itself.
That would be a mistake.
Why It’s Not Just Another Pretty Postcode
Hampton Wick has two claims to fame. The first is linguistic: it enjoys a long-standing cameo in Cockney rhyming slang (best left decoded elsewhere), popularised by the likes of Michael Caine, Bob Hoskins and Dick Van Dyke. Even The Goons got in on the act with a cheeky character name that slipped past BBC censors in the 1950s.
The second claim to fame is altogether more harmonious: Charlie Chandler's Guitar Experience.

The Shop
A short stroll from Kingston Bridge, and surrounded by an embarrassingly strong choice of pubs, Charlie Chandler’s Guitar Experience is a pilgrimage site for players who care less about flash and more about feel.
Charlie’s earlier venture, Chandler Guitars in Kew Gardens, was a cornerstone of the UK’s rock scene during its louder decades. Decades on, the client list still reads like a backstage laminate from the 70s, 80s and 90s. The reason musicians at the top of their game continue to return? Quiet competence. Charlie is exceptionally good at what he does.
The current shop is compact and refreshingly unpretentious. Electric and semi-acoustic guitars dominate, flanked by amps and essential paraphernalia. The atmosphere is reassuringly free of hard sell; seasoned players will recognise the tone immediately – knowledgeable, calm, no nonsense.
That said, temptation lurks. It is entirely possible to enter for strings and leave having destabilised your domestic budget.
In Action
On any given day, the door may swing open to reveal a regular clutching a road-worn case. On one recent visit, it concealed a 50-year-old butterscotch Telecaster, disgruntled by an unmusical crackle from its jack output.
Charlie wastes no time. The instrument is whisked upstairs to his glass-fronted workshop – perched above the shop floor like a gallery organ loft. Minutes later, after a few well-judged adjustments, the Telecaster re-emerges. Plugged in, it sings clearly and cleanly, its earlier protest silenced. Owner: delighted.

Before the till can draw breath, Charlie is assisting a first-time buyer with a modest £120 budget, guiding them towards an acoustic that won’t intimidate their enthusiasm.
Vintage royalty or wide-eyed beginner, both receive the same measured attention.

Why Go?
Whether you’re a collector chasing tone, a touring musician seeking swift repairs, or a newcomer buying your first guitar, Charlie Chandler’s Guitar Experience merits a detour. In a region known for polish and pedigree, it offers something rarer: craftsmanship without theatre.
